Sharing with his counterpart, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that Vietnam's newly amended Telecommunications Law contains many open regulations, allowing for 100% foreign-owned investment in data centers. Vietnam is also considering adjusting data-related regulations to be more flexible for data centers serving international markets. This would create favorable conditions for international investors, including those from Malaysia.
From the Malaysian side, Minister Gobind Singh Deo highly appreciated Vietnam's rapid development in recent times, especially in infrastructure and digital transformation. He believes that digital cooperation is the area with the most potential in relations between ASEAN countries, because despite differences in development levels and infrastructure, countries can support each other to jointly take advantage of opportunities from new technologies.
According to the Malaysian Minister of Digital Technology, the country has boosted investment in data centers, and initial projects are operating effectively. Malaysia identifies data centers as an inevitable trend of the future, linked to the development of the digital economy and AI. Based on this, Malaysia aims to expand its data center ecosystem to all ASEAN member countries.
During the meeting, the two ministers also agreed to develop programs connecting Vietnamese and Malaysian businesses. Minister Nguyen Manh Hung stated that Vietnam has a large and dynamic digital technology business sector with strengths in information technology. These businesses wish to expand investment, provide services, and develop products in Malaysia. He expressed his hope that Malaysia would create favorable conditions for Vietnamese digital technology businesses to enter the market.
Malaysian Minister Gobind Singh Deo expressed his desire for exchanges of delegations between the two sides to connect businesses and share policy developments, such as promoting investment in data centers in Vietnam.
Sharing views on issues of mutual interest, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung stated that Vietnam focuses on using AI to address economic and social issues. He argued that without a distinct approach to AI within ASEAN, countries in the region will find it difficult to leverage the advantages that AI offers. Therefore, the Minister proposed that the two countries establish a working group to exchange ideas and find the right approach to AI, aiming to build a philosophy for AI development for each nation.
